Janice Newman

Artist and Arts Educator

Janice Newman is a Rhode Island artist who moved to Sarasota, Florida in 2016.  She taught Art and Integrated Arts in Education K-12 in both private and public schools for 38 years.  At Rhode Island School of Design and Rhode Island College, she taught Foundation Drawing, Drawing and Painting, Photography and Art Education.

Janice’s primary focus is on the intrinsic beauty of the natural world.  She creates stunning images of flora, fauna, landscapes, urbanscapes and the figure.  Through direct and insightful observation of her subject matter, she is able to capture its detailed uniqueness while still conveying the sensual and spontaneous nature of the drawing and painting process. She has won several First Place awards locally, most recently in the Women Contemporary Artists 2023 Annual Show and in the Art Center Sarasota’s 2024 Annual All Members Show.  She is honored to be a member of the Petticoat Painters, one of the oldest continuously exhibiting women’s art group in the U.S., the National League of American Pen Women and Women Contemporary Artists, where she has served as President and Exhibition Chair.
